Violent Groundwater Eruption Triggered by a Distant Earthquake

چکیده

It is now well established that earthquakes cause various hydrogeological responses at distances thousands of kilometers from the epicenter. What remains unexplained large amplitude and intensity some responses. Following 2004 Mw 9.1 Sumatra earthquake, groundwater 3,200 km epicenter erupted violently a formed water fountain reaching height exceeding 60 m. We model relevant processes by combining tidal analysis level with numerical simulations using two-dimensional finite-element model. suggest eruption resulted combination factors, including rapid increase crustal permeability runaway CO2 exsolution bubble nucleation induced passage seismic waves. Our results may have implications for engineering applications such as oil production sequestration, hydrothermal features geysers.

Submarine landslide triggered by volcanic eruption recorded by in situ

NW Rota-1 is a submarine volcano in the Mariana volcanic arc that is notable as the site where underwater explosive eruptions were fi rst witnessed in A.D. 2004. After years of continuous low-level eruptive activity, a major landslide occurred at NW Rota-1 in August 2009, triggered by an unusually large eruption that produced 10 times the acoustic energy of the background level of activity. An ...

Coseismic ionospheric disturbances triggered by the Chi‐Chi earthquake

[1] At 17:47 UT on 20 September 1999, a large earthquake of magnitude Mw 7.6 struck the central Taiwan near a small town of Chi‐Chi. The ground‐based receivers of the global positioning system (GPS) in the Taiwan area detected coseismic ionospheric disturbances (CIDs) in the total electron content (TEC) triggered by the Chi‐Chi earthquake. When the CIDs travel away from the origin on the Earth ...

Limitations of rupture forecasting exposed by instantaneously triggered earthquake doublet

Earthquake hazard assessments and rupture forecasts are based on the potential length of seismic rupture and whether or not slip is arrested at fault segment boundaries. Such forecasts do not generally consider that one earthquake can trigger a second large event, near-instantaneously, at distances greater than a few kilometres. Here we present a geodetic and seismological analysis of a magnitu...

Seismicity remotely triggered by the magnitude 7.3 landers, california, earthquake.

The magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake of 28 June 1992 triggered a remarkably sudden and widespread increase in earthquake activity across much of the western United States. The triggered earthquakes, which occurred at distances up to 1250 kilometers (17 source dimensions) from the Landers mainshock, were confined to areas of persistent seismicity and strike-slip to normal faulting. Many of the t...
